Overview

Bad Walter's Bootleg Ice Cream, nestled on College Avenue in Oakland, is a standout destination for anyone craving inventive, high-quality frozen treats. This local ice cream shop goes beyond the usual scoop with a rotating menu that guarantees fresh, exciting flavors every week. Their commitment to unique blends—like the Roasted Strawberries and the coffee-inspired Hanky Panky—sets them apart in the competitive Bay Area ice cream scene.

Their ice cream is renowned for its creamy texture and richly layered flavor profiles. Whether you prefer classic vanilla or adventurous concoctions like Fa’Sho Dough, this spot delivers depth without overwhelming sweetness. What elevates the experience even further is that many offerings are lactose-free, making these indulgent delights accessible to a wider audience, including those with dietary restrictions.

Visitors consistently praise the staff for their welcoming and knowledgeable service. The team’s enthusiasm shines through as they encourage customers to sample various flavors, often suggesting tastes that broaden guests' palates. This friendly, community-rooted atmosphere transforms each visit into more than just a craving fix—it's a memorable outing.

The shop’s space complements the vibe: a cozy interior with limited seating and some outdoor tables creates an intimate neighborhood setting. While parking can be tricky during peak hours, an evening visit often provides a more relaxed experience. It’s clear Bad Walter’s thrives on personal connection and quality, prioritizing the craft of ice cream over mass production.

Bad Walter's Bootleg Ice Cream appeals to discerning locals and adventurous food lovers alike—those who seek not only flavor but meaningful moments in familiar surroundings. This Oakland gem continues to innovate with its creative flavors, thoughtful approach to inclusivity, and sincere customer engagement. If you’re in the area, it’s an essential stop for refreshing, memorable ice cream experiences.

Delicious ice creamery with unique flavors! Added bonus is the ice cream is lactose-free. The staff was extremely friendly as well. Try the Hanky Panky if you like coffee flavored ice cream.

BAD WALTER’S IS THE BEST ICE CREAM STORE OF ALL TIME! here’s why: 1. The ice cream- smooth, creamy, super flavorful, and most of all EXCITING FLAVORS! They just don’t miss. Every flavor I have tried has been absolutely delicious, even if it’s not “my” kind of flavor (I’m a chocolate/caramel girl or bust, but their fruit flavors are delicious too). Some of them have been truly sublime, top tier scoops of my whole life (I eat a lot of ice cream and seek it out everywhere I go). They go heavy on the mix-ins and yet the flavors are never overly sweet- I never get that awful sugar rush feeling after eating it. There’s not a bunch of flavors at one time but they change the flavors every week so it keeps it exciting and keeps us coming back regularly! Also I’m not lactose intolerant but appreciate that people who are get to enjoy the most delicious ice cream! 2. The vibes- cool spot, and pretty much everyone who works there is super friendly. Not only are they always chill about letting us try flavors (the whole point of visiting an ice cream store vs buying at the store imo), sometimes they even offer us specific ones to try I wouldn’t have gone for on my own. 3. It’s a neighborhood spot! Local small business and you can tell they care about their product/customers. also they have a reward card that’s actually good! TLDR Bad Walter’s 4ever!

Truly a phenomenal place for creamy ice cream that has a hint of alcohol. As one can tell by the name, they have very fun ice cream flavors at reasonable prices! They had a carrot cake flavor that I really liked and thought was amazing. There is a multi-use bathroom in the back with a few seats inside and small outdoor tables with foldable chairs.

Tonight, I had the Fa’Sho Dough, which is their version of Cookie Dough, and wow, was it sweet and delicious! I almost went back for another one. I’ve been trying Bad Walter’s even before they had a brick-and-mortar place. Back in the day, you had to go to their pop-ups all over the city. I’m so glad they opened a physical location because they really have some of the best flavors in the whole San Francisco Bay Area. They’re always experimenting and have new flavors every week or so. It’s always a new flavor every time I come here, which is always exciting. Plus, they use real dairy but have no lactose for all my lactose-intolerant friends out there. Please check them out—you won’t be disappointed by this Oakland gem!

Super yummy ice cream that is lactose free. We tried a bunch of flavors and ended up with a scoop each of “classic plain old vanilla” and “Inside out recess”. Great taste, friendly staff and decent seating area! Parking might be difficult on a busy afternoon but late evening should be fine. They change their flavors every week so check their Insta before heading in.

I was in bed craving dessert and searching on google maps for places currently open. There were a lot of great options, but none to motivate me leaving the house. Then I came across this place and saw on their website they had PANDAN sticky rice. I immediately jumped out of bed and drove over to see if it was too good to be true, and I’m SO GLAD I DID because their Pandan Sticky Rice ice cream is SO GOOD!!! I’m devastated that I got to it the day before they’re ending this rotating flavor but forever grateful I got to try this specialty

From the creative and fresh flavors that change weekly to the friendly staff and clean shop if you are getting ice cream anywhere else in the Bay Area or elsewhere in California for that matter you are making a mistake. Worth all the hype once you visit Bad Walters you’ll be coming back weekly just like me, and your freezer will be full on Monday and empty by Friday, just in time for another fresh restock!
